Located in a trans-Himalayan setting, the Warwan Panikhar Trek is a challenging trek that covers a distance of approximately 85 km. The trek is so offbeat that even locals from Kashmir and Ladakh do not know much about it. The trek is a transition from the rugged, otherworldly landscape of Ladakh to the endless, vibrant meadows of Kashmir.


The trek starts from Warwan Valley, located in the Kishtwar district of Jammu and Kashmir, and ends at Panikhar Valley in the Kargil district. This trek offers trekkers an opportunity to experience the local culture, stunning landscape while exploring the breathtaking scenery of the Himalayan region.  


Major Attractions: Majestic high mountains and high altitude pass, camping on a delta basin at Denora, majestic views of Suru Valley; river crossings; Hike on Barmal Glacier, traverse through crevasses; and explore the remotest villages of Kashmir Valley. The trail has plenty of rare wild flowers and wildlife, such as Himalayan Marmots, Asiatic Ibex, Brown Fox, and, if you're lucky, the rare Himalayan Brown Bear.

Day 1: Drive from Srinagar to Panikhar

Day 2:  Acclimatization day at Panikhar


Day 3: Panikhar to Denora 

  • Altitude: 10,700 ft to 12,350 ft Distance: 14 km Duration: 5-6 hours


Day 4: Denora to Kalapari

  • Altitude: 12,350 ft to 12,875 ft Distance: 3 km Duration: 1.5 hours


Day 5: Kalapari to Kaintal via Lonvilad Pass

Day 6: Kaintal to Humpet

  • Altitude: 11,550 ft to 10,950 ft Distance: 16.5 km Duration: 6 hours


Day 7: Humpet to Sukhnai

The nearest airport to the Warwan Valley is Srinagar Airport; you can hire a taxi or take a bus to reach the town of Kargil, which is the nearest town to the valley.

The nearest railway station connected to the rest of India is Jammu. From Jammu, you can hire a local taxi or take a bus to reach Srinagar.
