This Temple Complex was built by Lalitaaditya Muktipada one of the most celebrated Kings of Kashmir of the Karkota Dynasty. Scattered around the complex are Shiva lingas. The temple has an ancient spring known as Naran Nag. The spring was also known as Sodara Nag.
The temple was constructed in the 9th century by the king Avantivarman, during his reign in Jammu and Kashmir. He was a great devotee of Lord Vishnu and dedicated the temple to him known as Avantiswami. The temple has an imprint of the aristocratic lineage of Jammu and Kashmir spanning over 1100 years.
Historians are of the opinion that the 4th Buddhist Council took place here in Harwan.It is suggested that about 500 monks met at Harwan to discuss the doctrine of Buddhism. The Council was called upon by Kanishka himself between the 1st and 2nd century BCE.
It is also known as Pandou Laidan. Martand is another Sanskrit synonym for Surya.
The temple is one of the earliest known sun temples much older than Konark (Odisha) and Modhera (Gujarat).

Dating back to 400 AD, Mamleshwar Temple is the place where Lord Ganesh stood as a doorkeeper for her mother and didn’t allow Lord Shiva to enter its premises. This temple is not big by any means and is barely under 8 square feet internally, has a porch supported in the 2 columns. It houses an old pedestal and a Shiva Linga.
Burzahom means Birch, a tree species. Burzahom site has been named as the Northern Neolithic in view of its distinctive structural features with profusion of tools made of bones and stones and tools representing the ritualistic practices.
