Gurez, which is located on the Kishanganga River's banks, marks the change from Kashmir's lush alpine highlands to the rough, high-altitude deserts of the Ladakh region. Two surreal Alpine lakes, Patalwan Sar 1 and Patalwan Sar 2, are also located in the region. The trek is also called the Patalwan Lakes trek and one must traverse from lake 1 to lake 2 to see both lakes because they are divided by a steep and rocky ridge line.
Trekking in Gurez is a very recent activity which is being promoted by locals and administration under Border Tourism initiative.
The route to Patalwan Lakes or Gurez Valley Trek includes both ascents and descents and passes through boulder fields, valleys, and ridgelines. Due to the elevation increase and degree of steepness on the first day alone, the trek is classified as moderate.
Major Attractions: Three sided view of mount Habba Khatoon,lLush Green Pine forests, the trail also has plenty of rare wild flowers and wildlife, such as Himalayan Marmots, Asiatic Ibex, Brown foxes, and, if you're lucky, the rare Himalayan Brown Bear.
Trek Gradient : Moderate
Max Altitude : 3950 metres

Trekking in Gurez is a pretty recent activity. There has been only one commercial group that has trekked officially to Patalwan Lake till now, and we were part of it. The area is being promoted under the Border Tourism Program, and trekking activities can be done by getting all the necessary permissions from Tourism and Indian Army. But it is safe to say that, with the efforts or locals and administration, trekking in Gurez is a growing activity.
The total distance of Gurez Valley Trek is 33 kilometres approximately. The drive from Srinagar to Gurez is around 125 kilometres approximately.
Gurez Valley Trek falls under the moderate category. The reason is the steep ascent on the very first day; one has to gain 840 meters in the span of 6.5 kilometers. Plus, the boulder section while trekking to Patalwan Lakes is a little challenging.
On Gurez Valley Trek one can witness two high altitude alpine lakes:
Patalwan Sar I
Patalwan Sar II
The best time to do trekking in Gurez is from Mid July to Mid September, thats when the weather is mostly stable for outdoor activities across Kashmir.
